I’m currently downloading Magic: the Gathering the computer game from The Home of the Underdogs. It says it’ll take another one and a half hours, though, so I figure I’ve got some time to, I don’t know, write a blog or something.
Lemme tell ya, if I get this program working I’ll be thrilled. It was originally written for Windows 95—which I realize some of you might not remember—and it has some problems running on anything other than that. I’m about to try it on Windows XP, and it will probably make my computer explode.
When I did have M:tG on my old computer, way, way back in the day, it was kind of janky anyway. If I ever tried that thing where I open packs to do a sealed-deck or practice drafting, my computer would lock up and I’d have to restart. So that made it pretty much broken and in the bad way too, like Oath of Mages rather than Oath of Druids.
Right, but it was fun anyway, walking around Shandalar using a bad sealed deck against the bad constructed decks of skeletons and minotaurs. I’d like to tell you I have great memories of it, but I really don’t remember it that much. I wasn’t good enough back then to do well at the game, so I didn’t play it for very long. Mostly I remember walking around and losing games. Sometimes I’d accidentally walk into, like, a cave or something that was worse than the normal world topside, and then I’d really get crushed.
Right now I’m up to 20%!
Seriously, it’s a good way to become a better player. I recommend you download it if you have time. It’s completely legal because the license on the computer game has expired, and it’s free because The Underdogs are cool like that. Give it a try!
Anyway, right now, I (and as far as I know, my cousin Jeff) am still planning on going to Dayton on Saturday to try my luck against Ohio Vintage’s finest for a Mox Emerald. I called the place earlier and they confirmed that the tournament is on and that they’re expecting a good tournament.
In case you want to join, cards get thrown down at:
Bell Book and Comic
458 Patterson Road
Dayton, Ohio 45419
(937) 643-9006
Gametime is 2pm with registration at 1pm. Entry is $25 and that’ll get you 20 proxies with which to create absolute havoc.
Give it a shot, if you dare.
You could win a Mox Emerald!
You can finally make that Stompy deck you’ve always wanted!
Anyway… Since I’m such a threat, I’ll tell you that I’m running a deck very similar to the one I ran at the previous tournament, UB Fish. I just got some more cards in the mail, though, so I think the overall feel of the deck will be quite different. I had a list of changes made up, but, thinking about it now, I might not follow through on those plans even now. Mainly, I think I’d like to get an extra Mox in—a Jet to go with the Sapphire—because they set up more broken early turns.
Also, I’m trying to decide whether I want four Withered Wretches or if I’ll stick with three. I’m pretty sure I’m putting in Waterfront Bouncers as a maindeck answer to big creatures that I can’t Darkblast or Echoing Decay. Plus, I’d kind of like to run Rootwater Thieves because, well, I think they’re pretty good in Vintage, where a lot of decks don’t have a lot of win condition. Some just have one Tinker for Darksteel Colossus. Others may just run one or two Tendrils or a Cunning Wish for the kill.
Needless to say, I’ve been theorizing a lot, but I haven’t put anything together just yet, which is probably bad. I guess I’d normally like to have a little more time to do some playtesting, some goldfishing, some practice draws—you know, just get warmed up. But, I’ll be okay; I’m getting more and more confident with my deck, and I do have some better tournament experience under my belt, so hopefully I’ll be more formidable than last time.
But that’s about it for now, I guess. My download’s up to 68%, so I’ve still got some waiting to do.
Right now, I’ll just leave you with this: the best blonde joke ever! And I found it on a Magic fourm.
